REDUCING…REUSING…RECYCLING…

To make your house more eco-friendly so that you and your family can live in a healthier environment, become greener by decluttering your spaces.

First step, as I see it, is to prepare very carefully a plan for each space of your home. DECLUTTER YOUR HOME DOCUMENT. Second step, is to make an inventory of what you have in each room of your home and decide whether you keep it, sell or give it away and throw-out will lead you towards decluttering your home.

For a few weeks now, our home has been going through fall cleaning and a major renovation in our bathroom. When we are conscious of a greener environment, our spring or fall cleaning means applying the three “R” rule to declutter our home.

For example, in renovating our bathroom, we saved the wood mouldings, ceramic tiles and lights which are at the moment resting peacefully in our garage. Find out more about the construction and eco-friendly tips for our bathroom in the near future.

When it comes to going through my closet to make those seasonal changes in my wardrobe, this is the rule I follow: when one piece of clothing enters…one must be removed…and this is not easy to do.

So, to help you in sorting through your stuff work with five large containers and label them as follows: (if the containers are to small to work with, choose five different spaces in the room and identify them with the same labels)

Everything that hasn’t been worn or used in the last two years is to pass along or to throw away, if it is no longer usable. But be aware that “throw away” means finding out about local recycling places so that container No.3 is wisely disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

Become greener by decluttering your home and plan a garage sale with all the things you no longer want to keep and let others take advantage of those special finds of yours. When the sale is over, you can take the rest of the articles to local charities.

You can please a family in need, or someone in your own family, by giving them objects, clothes or furniture you will no longer be using but that are still good for another life elsewhere. It’s the same for cans of paint, varnish or construction material which can be used in renovating a room in your home or a community space where there is no budget for any materials or work.

Declutter your home and have organized spaces, then you will feel so good....free, if you will. I’m telling you, it’s like a big weight has been lifted and you can breathe easier. Try it with the room you use the most and let me know how it goes.

Stress is often caused by a lack of organization, especially when you are looking for something you are sure you had. Being organized will save you time and energy, not to mention money.
